Tips from Caulfield, Doomben and Morphettvile
Caulfield Guineas (1600m)
Colt has been wayward this prep but finally gets the Blinkers on and out to the mile. Was excellent fresh when unlucky but has just been a touch lost since, seems to have been run off his legs early over the shorter trips but has always been able to find the line (last splits good). With the shades on and a lovely draw in 4, a major improvement wouldn’t shock me at all - big price at this stage and fancy he can show his true talents.
G1 winning filly whose build up to this Grand Final has been flawless, was super fresh after settling at the rear of the field and then found the line nicely in on-pace dominated race in the Guineas Prelude. Peaks for this third-up and steps to the mile which are major positives. Can sit midfield with cover and come home over the top of them if theres a touch of pressure up-front.
This is a very even race but I have been really taken by the way this horse has returned this campaign. Both runs at Flemington and Caulfield have been luckless but fancy he peaks at a mile here. Draws for the sweetest run you could imagine and as long as he can get room to wind up from the 600m he could be mighty hard to hold out. Polished 6yo gelding only giving a few kgs to new season 4yo’s.
My god this is a great race, incredibly hard coming up with something on top but I reckon this fella offers great value at the price. Has been progressing well and never got a crack at them at any stage in the Turnbull, went to the line hard held. Like the seven-day turnaround into this and the fact he is drawn to sit on the "outside" of horses. Has become a genuine 2000m horse to my eye over the last 12 months, can bounce back heading towards a Cox Plate.
Spring Champion Stakes
Colt from QLD comes down for this pretty ordinary G1, like the way he truly put his rivals away over a mile three weeks back at Doomben – had a lovely trail behind the leaders and really ended up winning convincingly. Late splits were good and off that suggest the 2000m shouldn’t be an issue. Again draws for the lovely run in three. Keen he can knock off odds-on fave.
Doomben R2 No.4
WUZETIAN can run a race here at a genuine each-way price. Has improved drastically over the last month as they’ve been more positive on her early, recent win at Lismore was dominant when rolling forward and firing away from them late. Was only just beaten in a similar race here a month ago and suggest the recent success is just the confidence boost she needs, will roll forward with the light weight and give a sight.
Doomben R3 No.1
Small field but there’s some talent at the top! NO.1 RIVA DE LAGO was outstanding returning at Doomben two weeks ago over 1200m, tracked the leaders and put them to the sword over the final 300m to savage the line. Beat the flying Didntcostalot and runner-up Architect (since come out and won well). Can improve off that effort and after the claim from McGillivray he meets key rival better at the weights.
Morphettvile R3 No.6
Was excellent returning three weeks ago at the track over 1100m, closed hard and just missed to a horse who is flying. Second-up a noted improver and much fitter for the effort. Speed looks ok and step to 1200m suits. Like him for this.
