All Too Hard BM82

We’re back at Randwick for the first Group 1 in Sydney for 2016. Normally this meeting is held at Warwick Farm, but the excitement is at a new level due to superstar mare Winx competing in the Chipping Norton Stakes.

The rail is out 6m, which should mean fair racing conditions and we will have a dry track, although there are some minor showers forecasted during the day.

SKINNY – 3,4 / 11 / 5,6,10 / 6,11
WIDE – 1,2,3,4,5 / 11 / 1,2,5,6,10,11 / 2,6,10,11,12

We start the day with a good betting race. It’s a competitive staying contest with the stronger form lines standing out.
ANOTHER COCKTAIL has been progressing nicely and will enjoy the step up in distance here to 2400m. He has had 28 days off but has trialled since. With James McDonald, we can start the day in style.
Defrost My Heart was huge in defeat last start at the track and distance. If she can run a similar race, she should be right in the finish again. It’s always a good sign when leading jockey Hugh Bowman sticks with a horse like this.

Dee I Cee impressed enough with his first run in Australia. Racing second-up, expect immediate improvement and he looks like the value runner in the race.

Springbok Flyer has won two in a row and is also one from one at the track and distance. He’ll settle back and attack the line strongly.

Selections – ANOTHER COCKTAIL, Defrost My Heart, Dee I Cee, Springbok Flyer
Value Selection – Dee I Cee
ANOTHER COCKTAIL - 1pt @ 4.2

Pro Ride Skyline Stakes

Leading trainer John O’Shea appears to have a strong hand in this race, with both of his horses the shortest in the market. With only eight runners in the race, they should both be suited and they’ve both drawn well.

TELPERION comes into this race from his win in the Listed Lonhro Plate. What was to be liked about that victory was that he still did a fair bit wrong. James McDonald has elected to stay on this galloper which is a great sign and he’s drawn nicely.
Good Standing finished second in his only run last campaign. He’ll jump well from barrier one and has been well supported in the market.
Souchez impressed at Rosehill last year. The recent trial was impressive and he can play a part in this race, even though the 1200m is probably too short.

Hayman is making his racing debut here off the back of an impressive trial. He’s been supported in the market and jumps from barrier two, which should see him get a nice run through the early stages.

Selections – TELPERION, Good Standing, Souchez, Hayman Value Selection – Hayman
Telperion - 1pt @ 2.3

TAB Highway Plate

Fourteen horses in this race, with two last start winners and two well fancied in the market. There is the chance of getting some nice value in this 1600m event if the favourites are beaten.

APPOINT PERCY looks to be a very talented gelding that is starting to go places. He’s drawn wide in barrier 13 but he looks to be the class runner of the race.

Coolcat Dancer looks the main danger to the favourite. He’s stepping up in distance and does 3kg off his back with Koby Jennings riding from barrier nine.

King's Officer was a real eye catcher here last start when storming home to finish a narrow third. Back in trip now, which is not ideal, and drawn in barrier 14, which will make it a tough assignment.

Swivet was an impressive winner last start but had drifted in the early betting. The 1600m should suit him more and he has won at the track before.

Warken isn’t the most consistent galloper but will appreciate the step up to 1600m. He worked home strongly into second-place last start and from barrier six he should get cover through the early stages.

Selections – APPOINT PERCY, Coolcat Dancer, King’s Officer, Swivet
Value Selection – Warken
Appoint Percy - 1pt @ 2.25

Les Johnson Mem Sweet Embrace

This looks to be an exciting race on paper, with four last-start winners engaged in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes.

IN THE VANGUARD was well supported last start and didn’t let bettors down with an impressive victory over 1100m. This is obviously a step up in class but the support has come for her again.

Scarlet Rain has won back-to-back races and looks the main danger to our on top selection. She has also been well supported since markets opened but she does have to overcome the tricky barrier.

Smart Amelia hit the line well on debut behind the promising Honesty Prevails and remains under strong notice with Daniel Bowman taking the ride for the first time.

Twist Tops was an impressive winner last start. She has raced well this campaign and has won at the track and distance. She’s drawn well in barrier six and has each-way claims.

Gloriette is second up this campaign for the inform John O’Shea stable with James McDonald on board. She’s drawn well in barrier seven and was very unlucky last start at Kembla. She looks a strong each-way chance.

Selections – IN THE VANGUARD , Scarlet Rain, Smart Amelia, Twist Tops
Value Selection – Gloriette
In the Vanguard - 1pt @ 4.2

Coolmore Surround Stakes

There are some very talented fillies engaged in this Group 2 Coolmore Surround Stakes over 1400m, with the favourite GHISONI drawn well in barrier two. She looks to be a very special galloper, but this is the measuring stick for her. First up over 1400m is the query with only the sole trial under her belt, but she has the class.

Stay With Me has been supported since the markets opened. Drawn nicely in barrier four, she showed last start that she can attack the line strongly.

Perignon really impressed first up. Hugh Bowman now legs back aboard and she’ll appreciate the step up in trip. She’s also drawn to get a nice run from barrier five.

Honesta is the value runner in this race and has found early support. She has a tremendous record already (9:2-5-0) and has almost $500,000 in prize money. The only concern is that she has been first-up twice and has never placed.

Selections – GHISONI, Stay With Me, Perignon, Honesta
Value Selection – Honesta
GHISONI - 1pt @ 2.7

Guy Walter Stakes

The Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes over 1400m looks to be a race between three on paper, but we know it’s never that simple.

Solicit displayed good improvement last start behind star mare Winx and appears set to be peaking third up. She has a good record over 1400m and is drawn nicely in barrier six. She finished second at her only attempt at the track and distance and has been well supported in the early markets.

Peeping returned in good order with the big weight in the Triscay Stakes last start and looms as a major threat when racing second up. Although never winning second-up, she’s placed twice from three attempts and is also drawn nicely in barrier five.

Amicus won well when fresh, albeit narrowly. She has placed in 3/4 attempts when racing second up and possesses a solid record at the track and distance. She has to overcome a tricky barrier but if the top two selections are going to be beaten, it may be this four-year-old mare that provides the upset.

If there is going to be an upset, it may be caused by Tinto. She has won her last two with two impressive rides. She has had three attempts at the distance and never placed, though.

Selections – SOLICIT, Peeping, Amicus, Tinto
Value Selection – Tinto
Solicit - 1pt @ 2.5

Precise Air Chipping Norton

This is the race of the day and for so many reasons. We see the star of the track, Winx, racing second-up and hoping to win her fourth Group 1 for trainer Chris Waller.

First-up in the Apollo Stakes on her last start, she brought up her sixth straight victory and it’s almost impossible to see how she’s going to be beaten. She’s drawn nicely and should be in the perfect position through the early stages.

Hartnell made his racing debut in this race last year and finished second. He didn’t go as well as connections were hoping after that, but he has class and should be suited here.

Mongolian Khan provides further excitement to this race. The Caulfield Cup winner hasn’t raced for 132 days now, but if he’s fit and ready to go, he has to be respected at nice each-way odds.

Hauraki is second-up and will be hoping to add to her impressive record of 3:2-0-0 when second up. She has a good record at the track and distance and does look like value for trifecta’s and first fours.

Selections – WINX, Hartnell, Mongolian Khan, Hauraki
Value Selection – Hauraki
Winx - 1pt @ 1.35

Liverpool City Cup

This was one of the hardest races on the program to find a winner, however, it does mean that we’re looking at value for the winner of the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup.

GENERALIFE was given little hope first up when ridden cold from the inside draw. But from a nice barrier we’re going to see him improve dramatically. The six-year-old has won nine from 34 and this looks a nice option second-up.

Rich Enuff failed to salute as the heavily supported favourite on debut for Team Snowden last start, but he still showed enough to be confident that he can play a part in this race. His racing style should suit this field and he’ll be the one to catch late in this race.

It's Somewhat looks to be a very nice each-way bet in this race. He hasn’t raced for three months but does have good fresh form. He’s only had one attempt at the track and distance and that brought up an impressive victory.

Good Project won the Group 1 Railway Stakes in Western Australia last campaign. He has trialled well since and does have a good first-up record.

Selections – GENERALIFE, Rich Enuff, It’s Somewhat, Good Project
Value Selection – It’s Somewhat
Generalife - 1pt @ 6.00

Schweppes BM84

The final race of the day appears to lack depth, with only a few horses having good enough form to win this 1200m event.

MEURSAULT displayed sharp improvement second up when only narrowly beaten at this track and distance last start. James McDonald stays on which is a great sign and he should be rock hard fit and ready to win.

Nancy impressed with a win at the end of last campaign. Historically her best performances are first-up and she looks like another winning chance in this race.

Unequivocal has only won two from 15 but has the ability to win a race like this. She has run in the top three at the track and distance four times from five attempts.

My Favourite has been well supported in the early markets. He has a very good second-up record and all of his best performances have been over the 1200m. If he is going to cause an upset it will be in this race.
Typhoon Jolie looks another value chance in the race. She always runs well over 1200m and has drawn well in barrier one.

Selections – MEURSAULT, Nancy, Unequivocal, My Favourite
Value Selection – Typhoon Jolie
Meursault - 1pt @ 3.3
