Tom Gilmore's best bets for Thursday, May 5th.
Warrnambool R3 No.9 - MONTANA
Nice horse who broke through for a much deserved maiden win a month ago at Sandown over the 1400m, track that day had plenty of give so I fancy a heavy surface here wont be an issue. Prior to that win he finished under a length off super impressive filly Abbey Marie (recent Saturday winner and G1 Oaks bound!) which is enormous form. Like he's drawn in as he'll take closer order and drop back to 1300m when freshened wont hurt. Good horse.

Warrnambool R6 No.8 - VOODOO LAD (x2 NAP)
Makes his way down from Sydney after being competitive in the $350,000 Country Championships at Randwick this time last year, not withstanding that he has in his own right beaten and been very competitive with some pretty serious racehorses in his career to date. Was only a length off Artlee (since got within a length of T.J Smith runner-up Fell Swoop last weekend) in late February of 2015 which is nothing short of an outstanding form reference. Has been off the scene for some time but he does traditionally go well fresh and 1100m no issue, also 3 from 4 on soft tracks. He's the best of the day.
Voodoo Lad - 2pts @ 2.80
Warrnambool R9 No.6 - MA JONES
Ran on against the race pattern at Sandown a month ago when two leaders cleared out and were never really challenged, she was a mile off them so to rattle home to finish on their heels is a sound performance. Has been freshened back to the 1400m and looks to get a good rolling gallop which will no doubt allow her to finish off strongly. If she's within striking distance she can reel off a big last 200m to be savaging the line.
Ma Jones - 1pt @ 4.40
Wagga R7 No.3 - SURE AND FAST
Looks an excellent race for this talented 4yo son of Not A Single Doubt, would usually be cautious coming in fresh to a race like this but he's a proven flying machine first-up. Beat home subsequent G1 winner Holler when returning to the races in September last year over the 1200m (huge form) at Rosehill, then took on the older horses and made enormous ground against the pattern. Gets the right run on the map today and he's beaten much better than this.
Sure And Fast - 1pt @ 3.60
Gosford R3 No.4 - DIVERGENCE
Proven a bit of a bridesmaid in her career to date, but to be fair he latest effort she was a month between runs was sound under the circumstances. Speed was genuine enough and winner had the cold sit/3rd horse made ground. She'll be an improver physically for the run and the blinkers come off/winkers on in order to get her to settle better mid-race. She'll find the fence and in a race without an abundance of speed, should be hard to beat.
Divergence - 1pt @ 3.40
