Tom Gilmore's best bets for Swan Hill and Hawkesbury.
Swan Hill R6 No.1 - MONTEUX
He had a real good pipe-opener getting to the 2000m for the first time this prep at Cranbourne three weeks ago, went down narrowly where it appeared fitness might have just told late over the final 100m. Really like second crack at the trip and maps for the PR of the race from the favourable marble, should be winning.
Monteux - 1pt @ 2.70
Swan Hill R8 No.12 - SHOW A STAR (x2 NAP)
Promising horse who has progressed beautifully towards this over the past 6 weeks, win over 1400m was good tracking solid early tempo before going to Sandown and getting within 0.4 lengths of the really promising Spreadeagled (Stakes-class galloper). He should be close to his peal from a fitness perspective and no doubt improves stepping to a mile (3 from 3!). Maps for an ideal box-seat run and should prove very hard to beat.
Show a Star - 2pts @ 3.80
Hawkesbury R6 No.3 - IN A JIFFY
This is a nice mare on the up, thought the win fresh over 1400m was very, very good under the circumstances (clearly needs further/off two soft trials) and suggests to me she's in for a terrific campaign. No doubt strips fitter and appreciates the step up in trip to 1600m, gets a handy 3kg claim from in-form apprentice B.McDougall which see's her in beautifully relative weights. Could be worth following this horse.
In a Jiffy - 1pt @ 2.75
Hawkesbury R8 No.1 - MAGIC PANTHER
He went nicely when winning a month between runs at Kembla Grange over 1200m, stalked the early speed and just went bang at the 200m mark. If he has taken good improvement from that then the progression to 1300m won't be an issue and he may have drawn ideally out wide (track might suit those off the inside). Runner-up in that since went down narrowly in a smart maiden in town.
Magic Panther - 1pt @ 11.00
