Tom Gilmore's best bets for Geelong and Nowra today.
Geelong R2 No.6 - HEAVENLY DESCENT
Thought a few of the raced brigade didn't look to crash-hot so with that in mind keen to side with a debutant who has shown a bit in jump-outs/trials. Latest effort at Caulfield she hit the line well when asked for the effort, clearly doing her best work late. Reckon she'll be suited by the 1300m on debut - all she needs is a touch of luck from the inside marble.
Heavenly Descent - 1pt @ 4.00
Geelong R4 No.3 - GEE ONE EXPRESS (x2 NAP)
Jumped from 1700m to 2200m here 11 days ago when getting to the trip for the first time and I thought was a certainty beaten, jock totally fell asleep at the wheel (settled last) and was left with far too much to do. Keen he takes really good benefit for the run at the trip (yes second go!) and like the booking of senior hoop Craig Newitt. Just needs to get rolling at the 800m and he'll be winning.
Gee One Express - 1pt @ 2.30
Geelong R6 No.1 - MACS METTLE
Thought his run at Pakenham (synthetic) was terrific a month ago over the 1400m, got well out of his ground early and worked home strongly to hit the line well. Winner/runner-up have since both been on the heels of better gallopers/up in grade since and do like this fellas been freshened back to the 1300m. J.Mott can take closer order from the draw and be too strong late.
Macs Mettle - 1pt @ 2.50
Geelong R8 No.3 - GOLD CUFFLINKS
This looks a very average race and this horse was genuinely competitive in metropolitan-standard races in his most recent prep. When resuming late last year he flew home against the pattern at Moonee Valley over the 1200m and then proceeded to find 1-2 better in his runs following (Best Suggestion/Scapa Cove etc.). Haven't seen any trials/jump-outs but am keen he's got the ability to win this. Will more than likely go back from the wide alley, but if they run along he'll be very strong late.
Gold Cufflinks - 1pt @ 4.80
Nowra R2 No.1 - SMILING ALL
Has been here, there and everywhere this former Hong Kong based galloper, two runs since returning to Australia for D.Grisedale have actually been good. Fresh wasn't far off a handy midweek filly in Black Denim over the 1000m, before being nabbed late by Back To Jacko at Newcastle (that horse since run well midweek metro grade). Like the wide draw for him and freshened back to 1000m suits, will roll forward from the wide draw and take catching.
Smiling All - 1pt @ 3.60
