Tom Gilmore's best bets for Wangaratta and Kembla Grange
Wangaratta R2 No.8 - MYSTIC REWARD
Didn't have a whole lot of luck fresh at Echuca a month ago (bog track) when forced to work early, found the front and seemingly positioned up in the worst part of the track (winners swooped) so reckon there was merit to the effort. Like they've given her the gap between runs into today and this race looks to lack speed on paper. Suspect she can find the front quite comfortably, her debut back in October last year (just missed to Stakes competitive Orvassa) rates easily good enough to win this.
Wangaratta R4 No.4 - PUZZLED PRINCESS
Returned in a fairly slick affair at Mornington three weeks ago over the 1000m and managed to sit on a good speed and only go down a length, she trialled ok prior but did give the impression she'd improve for the outing (soft in betting). Blinkers go on for the first-time and she gets in well relative weights thanks to the 3kg claim. If she can cross/find the front and really run them along she can suck the sprint out of key rivals and take catching, one win to date was on a bog track so no concern there!
Wangaratta R8 No.7 - JOHNNY DOWRY
Think he's a better horse over a trip than what he's shown to date, like they get him away from highweight conditions (poor riders) and keen he carries the 60kgs with the talented L.Currie to ride. Had excuses at Moe over the 2400m and keen to assess on his efforts prior in better company, he's a genuine stayer and should relish every step of the 2800m. He does map for a beautiful run in transit and the bog track is of no concern. He'll be making ground from worse than midfield but pattern will favour those off the fence later in the day.
Wangaratta R9 No.6 - CUPID
The run two weeks ago at Wodonga was good when closing off well from midfield, was maybe ridden a touch handy after second-up winning good fashion over a promising one. Think fourth run in he certainly finds his peak physically and a heavy track won't be of any concern. Like he draws out/will get back, they'll be making ground towards the centre of the track/stand side rail by the end of the day and if he can find a cart into the race expect him to be the one finishing home over the top late.
Kembla Grange R6 No.2 - ASPEN STAR
Had plenty of chances to breakthrough but has seemingly (regularly) found one better, with that in mind thought his run fresh at Wyong two weeks ago over the 1350m was terrific. Probably had no right to stick on the way he did, gave me the impression he's ready to win and with the blinkers going on again/fitter now expect him to cross from the wide alley and take a considerable amount of beating. His best is good enough!
