Brisbane Roar look a good bet to win without conceding against Newcastle on Friday night.
Brisbane were emphatic 4-0 winners at home to the struggling Mariners last weekend as they were the only top-half side to pick up three points and as a result have moved level with the Wanderers at the top of the league. The Jets, meanwhile, shocked one of Brisbane’s title rivals as they beat City 2-1 at home and have moved above Wellington to 8th as they look to improve upon their bottom place finish from last season.
Brisbane have bounced back from heavy defeats against Victory and Adelaide resoundingly in the last couple of weeks as they won 3-1 at Sydney before thumping the Mariners at home. Roar’s home record this season is an impressive W7-D1-L1, though they’ve only managed three clean sheets and just one in their last six at the Suncorp Stadium. Each of those clean sheets came against current bottom-half sides, against whom Roar are W6-D0-L1 this term, though they only led at half-time in two of these matches and only Adelaide early on in the season and the Mariners in their last game were beaten by more than one goal.

Goals have been the problem for the Jets this season as they’ve managed just 15 in their 18 games, though they managed to find two against City’s defence, which is now the second worst in the division. They were aided by a red card shown to Jacob Melling after 64 minutes in that game and on the road they’ve now failed to score in their last five, losing the last four of these games. This came after winning their opening two away games of the season at Wellington and Phoenix, but they’re still yet to concede more than twice on the road this term and as a result their last five have had fewer than three goals with three seeing fewer than two strikes.
The teams that the Jets have failed to score against on the road this season are Adelaide and both Sydney sides, who all have strong defensive records, but so do Brisbane. Indeed the Roar became only the second side to keep a clean sheet against the Mariners last weekend and as a result we expect them to win this one without conceding against a Newcastle side that have comfortably the worst scoring record in the league.
