United are in tremendous form and they should be too strong for struggling Melbourne on Friday.
Adelaide continued their excellent run of form with a 4-0 win at Wellington last weekend to climb to the top of the table for the first time this season, a remarkable achievement considering they were bottom of the pile after eight games. City, meanwhile, remain in fourth after their 3-0 win when hosting Sydney and trail Adelaide by just four points.
Adelaide have now won 11 of 14 unbeaten games, including eight wins in their last nine as they’ve scored at least twice in seven of these matches and managed clean sheets in their last three. Their home record this season is W6-D4-L1 including six wins in their last seven at Hindmarsh Stadium. They’ve kept five clean sheets in their last eight at home, but only led at the break in four and the only top-half side they’ve hosted in this time was Brisbane in their last home match, whom they beat 3-0.

City managed their first clean sheet in 12 games, and only their second all season, against Sydney on the weekend. They found the net three times against Graham Arnold’s side, the 10th time they’ve scored more than twice in 22 games this term as their tally is now at 54 (2.5 gpg). City’s away record reads W3-D3-L5, with four of those defeats coming in their last five road games. Indeed, though City managed to win at Adelaide early on in the season, they’ve lost their last two trips to top-three sides, conceding seven goals in the process and trailing at the break in both of these matches.
Adelaide are in remarkable form at the moment and against a City side that are struggling on the road, the league leaders look a big price at 1.95 in this one. That looks the best bet, but since three of Adelaide’s last four home wins were by more than goal and City are notoriously leaky defensively, we wouldn’t put anyone off backing the home team -1 on the Asian handicap at 2.8.
