Sydney FC v Adelaide United

Sydney’s chances of reaching the Finals were severely dented by Brisbane’s 88th minute winner last weekend and they are now all but eliminated. Adelaide were comfortable 4-2 winners at home to the Mariners and with that victory moved back up to 3rd and they’ll be looking for another win here in the hope of breaking into the top-two ahead of the Finals.

Sydney’s defeat against Brisbane was their sixth in 10 winless games as their season has fallen away dramatically. Their home record this term is W4-D4-L4 but three of those defeats have come in their last four at the Allianz Stadium and three of their wins have come against bottom-three sides while the other was against the Wanderers early in the season when they were yet to hit their stride. Indeed, their record when hosting top-half teams since the start of last season is W1-D5-L6 in what have tended to be tight affairs with seven seeing fewer than three goals and the first half being level in nine.

With the win over the Mariners, Adelaide recovered from a mini blip after losing at home to City and drawing at the Wanderers in what was a pair of tough fixtures. Their record since they were bottom of the league after eight games is W12-D4-L1 as they’ve made a remarkable turnaround. Their overall away record this season is W5-D3-L4 but all four of those defeats came in their opening four road games of the season and they’ve now won five of their last six away matches while keeping a clean sheet in their last three. They’ve won at top teams like Brisbane, Perth and Victory whilst they’ve proven adept at beating the lesser teams as they came away with three points from both the Mariners and Phoenix.

Along with the Mariners, Sydney are probably the most out of form team in the division whilst Adelaide have performed superbly for a long period of time now. Their road form in particular is excellent and we think they can make it six wins from seven and inflict a fourth defeat in five for Sydney at home. Sydney have little left to play for domestically this season and could have one eye on their Champions League clash with the Pohang Steelers, while Adelaide will certainly be going all-out to secure a top-two finish.
