Adelaide will start their premiership defence by heading to Newcastle.
This definitely won’t be an easy game for the Reds despite the Jets being a bit of a ‘crisis club’ in the offseason.
Defending champions haven’t had the best fortunes in recent years and we saw what with Melbourne Victory last season.
What makes it more difficult for Adelaide is that the core of their title-winning side is now gone – Djite and Kamau in particular are big losses for coach Guillermo Amor.
If preseason is anything to go by then Adelaide are in serious trouble because it was only a matter of weeks ago that NPL side Redlands United toppled them in the FFA Cup.
When you consider that it took Adelaide the best part of two months to get going last season, then all the signs are there that they could be in for disappointment come Sunday.
This gives Newcastle the perfect opportunity to put their own issues aside and start the comp with three points.
They got rid of Scott Miller and have some hometown coaches in Mark Jones and Clayton Zane involved in the club, which I think is a huge positive for a community such as Newcastle who tend to embrace their own.
Newcastle hasn’t had a bad preseason and some may argue that its been better than Adelaide’s.
Being at Hunter Stadium and considering there is a definite vibe at Newcastle that this will be a much better season than last, I am tipping an upset and going for the Jets to take the points.
