Big, bad Andrew Bogut hasn't shied away from a social media stoush in recent weeks!
Men's basketball player, Andrew Bogut, is planning to bully opponents not only with his size but also his wit at these Olympics. The Australian has recuperated well from a left knee injury suffered two months ago when he hyper-extended the joint in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. While a longer recovery was expected, it is understood the 31-year old spent his time on the sidelines tirelessly researching opposing national teams for any personal flaws he can attack.
Bogut emphatically proved his fitness early on Saturday morning and was immediately cleared to play when he put Chef de Mission, Kitty Chiller, in her place, inquiring "Does your toilet flush Kitty? I thought you'd be at the Ritz?" after she naively asked him to hang up her shower curtains. With TAB odds implying the Boomer's have a slim 34/1 chance of winning gold, Australian men's coach, Andrej Lemanis, will take any edge he can get and has given the 213-centimetre giant free rein to verbally shame anyone that gets in his way.
When asked why he has worked so hard on his trash talk, Bogut replied "Well there's a saying Australian's love to cut down tall poppies and I realised pretty early on in my preparations for Rio that I'm the biggest Aussie on the team, so I just knew I had to get my banter up to scratch. Besides, we're competing against athletes from 23 nations around the world. Some of these guys don't even show up on your average Google search, I've really had to dig deep to find the dirt I need."
It appears the centre's efforts are beginning to pay off. Australia upset France 87-66 in their opening match on Saturday, with Bogut stating afterwards "We need to be pricks defensively". Australian point guard, Patty Mills, was full of praise for his Boomer's teammate, "I thought Delly (Matthew Dellavedova) was the grubbiest player we had but Bogey (Andrew Bogut) has always been pretty ruthless. He almost had me in tears when we played the Dubs (Golden State Warriors) earlier this year. I still have nightmares about that match, but he's really taken his sledging to the next level."
Having been traded to the Dallas Mavericks at the end of the season, the first-round, 2005 NBA draft pick no longer has to play nice with his former Golden State Warriors teammates. Bogut is rumoured to be saving his choice of words for American shooting guard, Klay Thompson, when they face up against each other on Wednesday morning. However, that hasn't stopped him from already unloading on opposite centre, DeAndre Jordan, claiming "he's got a better chance of scoring a date with Gisele Bündchen than from the free throw line".
Bogut has been in red hot form off the court in the lead up to the games. In an online showdown with Australian women's basketball player, Elizabeth Cambage, he called her out for skipping a team camp to attend music festival, Splendour in the Grass in Byron Bay, sending Twitter fans into meltdown. A recent decision was also made by developers of popular video game, NBA 2K17, to push back their September release date, in order to update the Australian's ratings to an unprecedented maximum 100 Banter as his key ability.
