Coleman Medal

Jarryd Roughead’s unfortunate posterior cruciate ligament injury has forced the Coleman Medal betting market into a two horse race. Scans revealed last week that Roughead will need surgery on his knee on return from his honeymoon, which will rule him out for four or five months. The injury was sustained during round 17 fixture against Carlton, and he is now expected to miss at least half of the season through injury.

After last season’s final, the Hawthorn star was priced at $15 to take home the Medal in the 2016 season. However since the injury news broke he’s drifted to as big as $67 with one bookie, remaining $26 worst odds. The Medal only now has two major contenders, last year’s winner Josh Kennedy, heads the market at $4.5, Kennedy’s odds have not been influenced by the Roughead news. The other player in contention is Buddy Franklin, Franklin has come in from $8 at the back end of 2015 to $5.5 in places. The odds movement has resulted from a combination of the injury news and Buddy’s back in training after his break last season.

Eddie Betts had a season to remember last year, finishing second in the list of goalkickers. The Adelaide man has been priced up at $34, which is a drastic improvement from the pre-season odds last year ($67). Another Adelaide man who performed well last year is Taylor Walker, Walker has spent a lot of his off season on social media, but with the Roughead injury he’s got a real chance at $11.
Jesse Hogan is tipped to have a stand out year, he kicked 44 goals from 20 games last season but is expected to exceed this tally with ease in 2016. Last year’s rising star has been priced at $26 for the Coleman, but has been as short as $19 with some bookies.
