Tom Gilmore's best bets for Sunday, May 15th.
Pakenham R2 No.2 - AVENUE WHISPER
Was an absolute certainty beaten on return fresh/debut for D.Weir at Ballarat three weeks ago over the 1100m, was just basically pocketed up the length of the straight and never was given a crack at them. Don't mind that she's drawn out as she can sit deep with cover on a big spacious track like this and just basically be too good. Improved a length or two fitness-wise and will get the job done here, no concern the extra 100m.
Avenue Whisper - 2pts @ 1.8
Pakenham R3 No.1 - ARTIE FRED
Thought he was really good fresh at Mornington two weeks ago over the 1000m, leaders ran them along so he was forced to settle some distance off them. Managed to make really good ground late though and suggested he's right on track. Fitter now and 1200m are two major positives, big track at Pakenham also suits. Was only a length off Group-class filly Egypt late last year, really surprising he's still a maiden but will change that status this afternoon!
Artie Fred - 1pt @ 6.00
Pakenham R4 No.6 - DISTANT SKY
Thought his run at Sale recently was very good, made terrific ground in a race dominated by those much handier to the early speed. Fancy that has gone close to topping him off, do expect him to peak today and conditions look suitable. Strikes a soft track/good speed on paper which will give him every chance to finish off over the top late. Maybe slight query sticking at the trip but he can get it done in my book. Will follow to a mile and beyond next start, too!
Distant Sky - 1pt @ 6.5
Pakenham R6 No.2 - ADMIRABEEL
Ran well when quite heavily backed at Ballarat fresh three weeks ago, made good ground but just couldn't quite reel in a horse thats low-flying (on-speed). The 1200m was certainly well short of her best trip so with the run under her belt/improving to 1400m she looks mighty hard to beat. Sting out no issue either, should have a bit of a class edge on these, she's the horse on the up.
Admirabeel - 1pt @ 2.9
Sunshine Coast R1 No.11 - SPANISH GARDEN
Has been racing like a horse thats been looking for a mile, conditions he finally gets today! Thought her effort chasing here a week ago was excellent, made significant ground and was still hurtling through the line late. Like she's been turned around on the 7-day backup (suggests she's in good order!) and does appear to get good speed on paper. Sunny Coast has been playing favourably to those making ground from the rear, so no real excuses today!
Spanish Garden - 1pt @ 3.8
Gawler R6 No.2 - LEXGETREDDY
Smart mare who performed well in good grade in Melbourne before heading east to South Australia, was ok fresh here three weeks ago but did run without the blinkers - they go back on today which looks pivotal. Should get a charmed run and will have improved immensely for the recent hitout. Just better than these.
