Tom Gilmore's best bets across Australia for Thursday, May 19th.
Ararat R1 No.8 - HARD SPARK
Seemingly had his chance this preparation but was impressed with the way he stuck it out over the 1200m at Horsham two weeks ago. Just no match for one from the all-conquering D.Weir stable but did keep at his work well. Like him today as he's clearly at his top and the race looks lacking in speed on paper. If he gets the right run mid-race he'll take plenty of catching late. This isn't a strong group to overcome.
Hard Spark - 1pt @ 4.20
Ararat R7 No.3 - VAIN KINGDOM
Went really well fresh for D.Bowman at Bendigo two weeks ago when not far off a very smart filly, reckon he'll improve a length or two for that run and the wide draw means they'll be positive early. Not overly concerned by the weight as this is a very poor field (he's dropped in grade) and he's the horse on the up. Can win this and string another together two weeks later.
Vain Kingdom - 1pt @ 3.00
Hawkesbury R1 No.1 - QUANTRILL
Was disappointing fresh in an only ok race but did pull up with a slow recovery so all may not have been well, had previously trialled well and first prep was right on the heels of Japonisme (G1 winner) and Muraqaba/Kings Troop (G1 competitive). He's better than what he produced first-up and can atone for it here this afternoon.
Quantrill - 1pt @ 2.30
Pakenham R1 No.6 - ISABELIA
Didn't go a yard on a heavy track and had traffic issues throughout so totally forgiving her run at Warrnambool, going off her debut it would have her right in this. Typical of Caulfield-based horses to perform well on the poly surfaces so I think getting onto the synthetic will be a major plus. Will get the charmed run in the box seat and be very hard to beat.
Isabeli - 1pt @ 1.85
Pakenham R2 No.3 - SACRED DAYS
Good horse this who won't be a maiden after tonight. Was really good in metro-maiden company three weeks ago at Sandown. Winner looks a handy horse and this is considerably easier. He's at his top now and it won't shock to see M.Zahra push to the front from the wide alley looking to control things. If he gets a moments peace mid-race he'll be too good for this lot.
Sacred Days - 1pt @ 2.40
Pakenham R7 No.4 - ORUJO
This is as poor a field as this fellas seen in some time, thought he went ok despite the 5 length margin last start at Caulfield, was never really on the track but he did stick on ok. Gets a much better run on the map tonight and with C.Williams on he should be given every chance. First go on the synthetic will be interesting but he's been competitive with much better than this throughout his career to date. Goes well 'Good' tracks so shouldn't be an issue.
Orujo - 1pt @ 5.00
