This week sees the return of Champions League football, with some of Europe’s top teams (such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Man City) keen to carry on their strong domestic start into European’s elite club competition, and others (such as Premier League and Serie A title holders Chelsea and Juventus) will look to atone for a poor start to their title defence with a good showing in Europe. Some of the ties of the round see Man City take on last year’s finalists Juventus, with the away team starting as the bookies’ underdogs in that tie, whilst on Wednesday, Barcelona face a tricky away tie to Roma, who lost only 2 home matches in the league last season.

My first tip for tonight’s matches is for Real Madrid to be in the lead by half time against Shakhtar Donetsk. One thing you can always count on with Real Madrid, particularly at home, is for there to be a goal by half time in their matches. Given that Shakhtar have lost two key players over the summer (Luiz Adriano to AC Milan and Douglas Costa to Bayern Munich), I expect Real Madrid to have too much for them, and after scoring 11 goals in their last 2 games without conceding any, it’s conceivable that Real will once more have a half time lead here. Grab Real Madrid Half Time result at best odds of 1.53 with Ladbrokes.

Also tonight, Man City take on Juventus in what should be a cracking tie – City have scored 11 goals in the league already this season, incredibly without conceding a single one; Juventus haven’t fared so well in their title defence, picking up just 1 point from their opening 3 games, including losses to Udinese and Roma, where the losses of Andrea Pirlo and Carlos Tevez to the Old Lady have clearly been felt. Based on domestic form, Man City go into the match as clear favourites; whilst I think it will be tight, I think City’s attacking line-up, even without Sergio Aguero, will have enough to win this one, and I’m backing City at odds of 1.80 with William Hill.

Chelsea will look to get their confidence back up when they face off against Maccabi Tel Aviv at Stamford Bridge; whilst this season so far has been slightly reminiscent of when Mourinho left Chelsea the first time round, I fancy them to do better than the draw he managed at home to Rosenborg in his final game in charge. Maccabi Tel Aviv got to the Champions League by knocking out Basel on away goals, but I expect their luck to run out tomorrow night with Chelsea returning to form and hitting a few goals against them in the process. Finally, not in the Champions League (though with the form they’re in, they could end up getting there!) I’m backing Aberdeen to beat Hamilton at home at odds of 1.45 with MarathonBet. Aberdeen have had a stunning start to their domestic campaign this year, with the icing on the cake being their home victory against Celtic despite conceding first and then having a man sent off. Whilst Celtic remain strong favourites to retain their title, Aberdeen will look to push them as far as they can on a fraction of their resources, and I’m backing Aberdeen to make it 7 victories in a row tonight, to go 5 points clear of the current title holders.
